I came across this concept the other day and was immediately intrigued. Part clothing swap, part DIY workshop, Swap-O-Rama-Rama seems to be growing in number across the US and internationally. I must admit, I have never been to one but I am very tempted to learn more about how this concept works.
First some details. At a Swap-O-Rama-Rama, attendees contribute unwanted clothing (and a small donation) to a community clothing pile. In exchange, they get to pick out some new digs from the pile and attend workshops given by local artists on how to tailor their selections to their own figures or even on how to design an entirely new creation out of several other pieces.
According to the Web site, all the materials and equipment needed to “sew, embroider, bead, fix, repair, and knit” are provided. Following the clothing swap and workshops there is a fashion show where attendees can show off their creations and progressive local fashion shops can display their recycled or eco fashions as well.
The best part is that the woman behind the idea, Wendy Tremayne, a New-Yorker, is keen to see the concept expand. She’s encouraging people to plan and host Swap-O-Rama-Rama’s in their own cities. She’ll even provide you with some event planning tips and guidelines to make the event a success.
So has anyone ever been to one of these? Or even better, does anyone want to plan one in their own city!? If you’re thinking of planning one in Toronto, please let me know. And if you’re inspired to plan one in any city, please keep us posted!

hi!
my google news alert led me here. thanks for the support on the swaps. yes its true, anyone who needs my help staring their own can count on me for web space, email lists, art, press promotion and as much training as they need. i used a creative commons copyright which means that it’s everyone’s project except for corporations who I’m allowed to keep away and I do keep them away! if any of your readers want to get deeper into the philosophy of this event check out: http://gaiatreehouse.com/unbounded.htm while swap-o-rama-rama is fun as hell it’s founded on some really strong principals about consumerism, waste, the structure of society in america and how it’s effecting our very humanness.
well, thanks again. and for anyone who wants a hand getting a swap-o-rama-rama started.. give a yell.
